Donor Story

It Started with a Swab. It Led to Saving a Life – Navya’s Story

Sometimes, a personal experience sparks something bigger - a quiet determination to help, to heal, to give back. For Navya, that spark led to a decision that could change someone’s life.

Read her story -

“A few years ago, I registered as a potential blood stem cell donor with DKMS. I didn’t think too much of it back then - just that it was a good thing to do. But the reason behind it was deeply personal. My grandmother suffered from leukemia, and watching her go through it left a lasting impact on me. I knew I wanted to do something meaningful in that direction, and this felt like a step I could take.

When I got the call in mid-2024 saying I was a match for someone, my first reaction, honestly, was “Is this a scam?” But after a few calls with the team at DKMS, the testing procedures, and constant reassurance, I realized this was real - and that I could actually help save someone’s life. That moment changed everything.

I was already aware of the process, so I didn’t have many concerns. But convincing my parents was a little challenging. They were hesitant about me traveling to Bengaluru for the donation. I had to keep them updated throughout - lots of calls, lots of reassurances - but in the end, they were supportive.

The Stem Cell Donation Experience

Before the procedure, I did some research and the nurses and DKMS team were incredibly helpful. They prepared me for the minor side effects, so I knew what to expect. My journey to the collection center was smooth - cab booked, flights arranged - and I even had my sister accompany me, which helped calm my nerves.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t anxious. But my coordinator was kind, and I felt supported. The day before the donation, I had a headache and felt a bit nauseous, but on the day of the collection, I was just relieved and happy. A small procedure like this could mean a second chance at life for someone - and that’s a powerful feeling.

After the donation, my family was really proud of me. Even my friends were curious about the process and wanted to know how they could register too. That made me feel like the impact of my decision was reaching even further than I’d imagined.

A message to my recipient - I hope you’re healing, growing stronger, and holding on with courage. You may not know me, but I’ve been thinking of you and cheering you on from afar. Somewhere out there, someone truly believes in your recovery - and always will.

Message For All

To those who haven’t registered yet: please consider it. It’s a simple act that could change someone’s entire life. In a world where everything feels uncertain, let’s choose kindness and action.

And to anyone who’s matched and feeling unsure - I understand. But take it from me: it’s not as scary as it sounds. You’ve got this, hero.
