Donor Story

Qutubuddin’s Story of Becoming a Stem Cell Donor!

In the hustle of everyday life, some decisions hold the power to transform lives.

In the hustle of everyday life, some decisions hold the power to transform lives. Mahboobhussain Qutbuddin Shaikh, 35, working in the Fisheries industry in Gujarat, embarked on such a journey when he registered as a potential blood stem cell donor in Vadodara, Gujarat, in December 2024.

Like many, Qutubuddin had never encountered blood cancer or blood disorders in their immediate family. "I had no personal experience with it, but I recently learned about a girl in our extended family suffering from CML," he shared. A video featuring Dhruv Rathee, in collaboration with DKMS, prompted him to register with DKMS Foundation, India.

When Qutubuddin learned he had been matched with a patient, excitement mingled with concern. "I was very excited but also a little worried about my family's future, what if something happens to me?" he recalled. His friends and family, though supportive, expressed concern about his health.

Preparing for the Journey

To ease his doubts, Qutubuddin consulted doctors at the Civil Cancer Hospital in Ahmedabad and reached out to past donors for guidance. "Their advice helped me prepare mentally," he said, highlighting that support is always accessible for potential donors.

On the day of the donation, DKMS Foundation, India, ensured Qutubuddin had a seamless experience—from home to the collection centre and back, including flights, vehicles, hotel accommodations, and meals. Despite initial uncertainty, Qutubuddin says he placed trust in Allah and proceeded with the donation.

A Life-Changing Experience

Reflecting on the experience, Qutubuddin says, "I am feeling good and fit. The entire donation journey with DKMS Foundation, India, deserves a 10/10 rating." Post-donation, the sense of fulfilment was overwhelming. Friends and family acknowledged the gift of life Qutubuddin was enabling through his blood stem cell donation, calling it a rare blessing.

With heartfelt sincerity, Qutubuddin sends a message to their recipient: "I am praying for you. Inshallah, you will recover fully and be fit very soon."

Message For All

"You have the power to make a difference-register now and help save a life," he urged, inspiring action towards hope and altruism.

For registered donors who are hesitant to donate, the message remains the same: "This is a chance to make a profound impact. Go ahead."

And for those preparing to donate soon: "You are going for a good cause—keep going!"
