Donor Story

From Scrolling to Saving: How an Instagram Post Led Soumya to Become a Lifesaver

Soumya (22 years) says he has clarity on what motivates him in navigating his life.

In a time when most youngsters in their early 20s are figuring out various aspects of their lives, such as careers and relationships, Soumya (22) says he has clarity on what motivates him in navigating his life. While his peers spend hours scrolling endlessly through social media posts, Soumya quietly and intentionally prepared himself to give a stranger a second chance at life!

In March 2024, Soumya came across DKMS’s social media post on Instagram that piqued his interest in becoming a blood stem cell donor. What most people would scroll past, he took action. He visited the DKMS Foundation India website and then registered himself online to receive his swab kit. A wanderer by passion and a full-time student, Soumya shares what motivates him in life. He says, “I have always believed in helping people. It is my life goal.”

Against All Odds, Soumya Was Found to Be a Match

A few months after he registered as a blood stem cell donor, Soumya received a call that not only changed his life but could also give someone a second chance at life. “When I found out that I could help someone fighting blood cancer by donating my blood stem cells, I did not think twice.” Soumya had matched with a patient in need. It’s not just about registering the number of donors; it’s also about finding the right genetic match, which makes the search highly complex and time-consuming. It is as rare as finding one in a million. While most donors wait for years together, in Soumya’s case, he was found as a match soon. When asked about his initial reactions, he humbly says, “It felt like God had picked me for this; therefore, I was chosen so soon.”

However, his excitement did not translate the same way within his family and friends. “When I expressed my joy and shared the news with them, they tried to dissuade me, they were scared,” Soumya says. “However, my self-motivation was unbreakable. I was fearless—I kept telling myself that nothing bad would happen, because this is meant to be.”

When One Voice Said, “Someone Needs Me”

DKMS Foundation India helped Soumya with travel and logistics. “All through my journey, I only had one voice in my mind—someone out there needs me. This voice helped me stay strong and determined,” recalls Soumya. “For a second, during the day of the blood stem cell donation, I agree I was a little scared. But the team at the collection centre and DKMS provided continuous support,” he added.

When asked about his feelings post-blood stem cell donation, he didn’t hesitate to reflect; he beamed with joy. He says, “I was proud of myself!” Rightly so, his selfless act has given a patient a second chance at life! An act of kindness is infectious—it never misses a heart. This time, Soumya’s emotions had found their way into his family and friends, he says. “After the donation, my family and friends were all proud.”

Soumya signs off with a heartfelt note for his recipient, “I hope my one simple act helps you gain strength, fill your life with good health. I pray you have a brighter future. You are not alone!” For those who haven’t registered as donors, Soumya has just one thing to say: “Don’t be afraid. This might be your chance to become someone’s lifesaver.”
