Loni first discovered DKMS on Instagram, and the idea of becoming a potential stem cell donor immediately struck a chord with her.
How It All Started
Loni first discovered DKMS on Instagram, and the idea of becoming a potential stem cell donor immediately struck a chord with her. She had never hesitated when it came to donation - whether it was blood, stem cells, or even organs. To her, giving was more than just an option; it was a responsibility - a simple act that could create a profound impact on someone’s life.
Read her story of being a lifesaver:
“When I first heard about stem cell donation it was through a video on Instagram and I was so intrigued to know that I could possibly save someone’s life with so little effort. After a bit of research, I registered, received my swab kit within ten days, and sent it back immediately. A few months later, I got my donor ID, officially becoming a potential lifesaver.
The Call That Changed Everything
When I found out I was a match for a patient, my first reaction was pure joy. I never had any doubts about proceeding - it wasn’t even a question in my mind. However, convincing my family was another story. My parents, especially my mom, were hesitant and worried. But with time, patience, and a lot of explanations, they came around. When the day of my donation arrived, my entire family flew to Bengaluru to support me. That meant the world to me.
Preparing for the Big Day
The team in Bengaluru made everything seamless. I didn’t have to worry about a thing. I focused on eating well, getting enough rest, and avoiding anything that could put my health at risk. The G-CSF injections did cause some body aches, but since I had been well informed about them, I knew what to expect.
The Day of Donation
On the morning of my donation, I woke up excited. I had my last injection early and couldn’t go back to sleep because I was looking forward to the procedure. After a good breakfast and a quick visit to a temple, I headed to the collection center. It all felt surreal.
The medical staff were incredible - warm, attentive, and always checking in on me. I had my mom with me in the room, and I kept chatting with the nurses throughout the process. I was constantly provided with water and supplements, and I never felt uncomfortable. The entire experience was smooth, and I was deeply grateful for the care I received.
Life After Donation
The slight back pain from the injections lingered for about three days, but other than that, I felt perfectly fine. I was advised to avoid strenuous activities, but I was fit to travel soon after. Looking back, I have no regrets - just the immense satisfaction of knowing I was able to help.
A Message to My Recipient
I hope you’re doing well and receiving your treatment with strength and hope. I know this journey isn’t easy, but please remember - your genetic twin is rooting for you. I can’t wait for the day we can meet in person. Until then, stay strong.
Why You Should Register
I know the idea of donating stem cells might seem scary. Some fear needles, some fear pain. But no fear is bigger than the chance to save a life. Registering as a donor doesn’t just mean you’re signing up for a procedure - it means you’re giving hope to someone who is fighting a battle they never chose.
If you have the chance to ease someone’s suffering, even for a moment, isn’t it worth it? Please consider registering as a potential donor. It could be the most meaningful decision you ever make.
