Donor Story

What else could be more fortunate than to help someone get a new life?

Sometimes, the most powerful moments in life begin with a simple choice. You may not have a personal connection to someone battling blood cancer or a blood disorder, but your decision to register as a blood stem cell donor could mean everything to someone who does.

At just 20 years old, Satvik Jaiswal, a student at IIT Kharagpur, made that choice. What followed was a journey of quiet courage, deep emotion, and an act of compassion that gave someone a second chance at life.

Satvik shares his inspiring story.

I first encountered the blood stem cell donor registration drive while on campus at IIT Kharagpur in October 2023.

I didn’t have a personal reason to sign up. No one in my family or close circle had been affected by blood cancer or any such disorder. But when I learned more about how a simple swab could potentially help save someone’s life, it just clicked for me. I thought, what else could be more fortunate than to help someone get a new life? So I registered, not knowing if I’d ever be called.

The Moment That Changed Everything

I was overwhelmed when I got the call saying I was a match for a patient. I couldn’t hold back my tears. I felt incredibly lucky, like the universe had picked me to do something truly meaningful.

There were a few initial concerns, sure. I had questions about the dos and don'ts, and my family, while proud, was a little worried. But the reason behind it all kept me steady. I didn’t need much convincing. The motivation for the cause was more than enough.

When the donation day came closer, I was given GCSF injections to help increase stem cell production. They did give me a bit of back pain, but nothing I couldn’t handle. I took a cab from my hostel to the collection center that day. It was a smooth ride, and I felt calm. I wasn’t nervous, just hoping everything would go well.

On the day of the donation, I felt calm. Strangely normal, actually. I just hoped everything would go smoothly. And it did. The process was done through apheresis, an advanced machine that collects the stem cells from the blood. It sounds complex, but trust me, it’s simple and seamless. It’s just like donating blood, only with cooler equipment.

The Aftermath of a Selfless Act

After the donation, I felt blessed. Honestly, there’s no better word for it. Blessed and responsible, like I had accomplished something that mattered. My friends and family were proud, some were even surprised at how easy and seamless the whole process was.

I don’t know much about the patient who received my stem cells. But if she ever reads this, I want to say: stay happy, stay optimistic, and get well soon. I’m rooting for you.

To anyone reading this who hasn’t registered as a donor yet? Please do. Your small act of kindness could give someone a second chance at life. And if you’re already registered but unsure about going through with it, let me reassure you, it’s really not complicated or scary. The people at DKMS are professionals. They take care of everything. All you need to bring is your willingness to help.

And if you’re about to donate? Don’t worry. Just focus on the noble cause you’re about to contribute to. You’re doing something incredible.
